The Publishing House of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), founded 175 years ago, is one of Austria’s leading scientific publishers. It offers over 3,500 titles, including more than 400 open-access publications. Its collection features a wide range of scholarly journals, book series, and academic monographs, providing valuable resources for researchers and readers around the world.
The Client wanted to modernize its online presence in time for its 175th anniversary. The previous website and webshop no longer met current standards of usability, accessibility, and technical performance. Ordering processes were outdated and did not fully support international visibility of the publishing house’s program. Additionally, readers and researchers needed seamless access to both open-access publications and purchasable content down to the level of individual journal articles and book chapters.
We developed a completely re-conceptualized website with an integrated modern webshop. The new platform offers:
The new web presence has created a central hub for both researchers and general readers, nationally and internationally. It strengthens digital science communication by ensuring free availability of open-access content while also simplifying the purchase process for the publisher’s commercial catalog. With improved accessibility, user guidance, and modern webshop functionality, the platform significantly increases the visibility of the ÖAW Publishing House worldwide.
